Contractors and professional service firms in Ohio and North Carolina often hear that they need general liability. Many also hear they need errors and omissions coverage. Those are not the same policy, and buying one does not automatically replace the other.
This guide explains when a business may need both Commercial General Liability (CGL) and Errors and Omissions (E&O), also called professional liability.
What CGL Is Built to Handle
Commercial general liability is the policy most contracts mean when they ask for “liability insurance.” It is aimed at third-party claims involving:
- Bodily injury
- Property damage
- Certain personal and advertising injury offenses
Examples include a visitor who slips on a job site, a subcontractor who damages a client’s interior, or a claim tied to completed work that physically injures someone. CGL is not designed as a catch-all for bad advice, design mistakes, or professional service errors.
What E&O Is Built to Handle
Errors and omissions coverage focuses on financial harm that comes from professional services. Typical themes include negligence, mistakes, or failures in the work product or advice itself, rather than a slip-and-fall style injury.
Trades and firms that design, consult, inspect, advise, or provide specialized services are the usual buyers. A pure labor-only crew may rely more heavily on CGL and other lines, while a design-build firm, IT consultant, or specialized inspector may need E&O in addition to CGL.
Why Contracts Often Ask for Both
Owners and general contractors draft insurance exhibits to close gaps. They may require:
- CGL with stated limits and additional insured wording
- Professional liability when your scope includes design, consulting, or similar services
- Proof that coverage continues after the job ends, especially for completed operations and, for E&O, an extended reporting discussion when claims-made forms are used
If your proposal includes design decisions, technical recommendations, or stamped work, expect E&O questions even if you already carry strong CGL.
A Simple Way to Decide
- List the services you sell, not just the trade name on your truck.
- Read the insurance exhibit on the jobs you want to win.
- Ask whether a claim would sound like “someone got hurt / something got broken” (often CGL) or “your professional service caused a financial loss” (often E&O).
- Confirm with an independent agent who sees both contractor and professional accounts in Ohio and North Carolina.
Related Coverages People Mix Up
- Workers compensation: employee injuries, separate from CGL
- Commercial auto: vehicles, separate from CGL
- Tools and installed materials: inland marine or builders risk discussions, not E&O
Stacking the wrong certificate language on a bid can slow payment or block job access. Get the forms right before you mobilize.
When to Call an Agent
Call if a bid requires professional liability you do not carry, if your work has shifted into design-build, or if you are unsure whether a client’s additional insured request is a CGL issue, an E&O issue, or both. Kaufman Insurance Group helps contractors and professional firms compare options without pretending one policy covers every risk.

FAQs
If I have CGL, do I still need E&O?
If you provide professional services that can cause financial harm without a bodily injury or property damage claim, you may need E&O in addition to CGL.
Are CGL and E&O the same as a business owner policy?
No. A business owners policy may package CGL with property. E&O is usually a separate professional liability form.
Do Ohio and North Carolina jobs use different rules?
State law and contract practice differ, but the CGL versus E&O distinction is consistent: physical liability claims versus professional service claims. Always read the job’s insurance exhibit.
