The basics
What RV insurance is
RV insurance is a policy made for recreational vehicles. It combines the kind of protection you get on a car policy, such as liability if you cause an accident, with protection that is closer to a homeowners policy, such as coverage for the belongings you keep inside and for accidents at your campsite.
A regular auto policy was not written with a rolling home in mind. It may not cover the furniture, appliances, and gear inside your camper, and it usually does nothing for you when the RV is parked and someone is hurt at your site. An RV policy is designed to fill those gaps.

Motorized RVs
Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes are driven on the road, so they need liability coverage much like a car, plus physical damage coverage for the RV itself.
Towable RVs
Travel trailers, fifth wheels, pop-up campers, and toy haulers are pulled by another vehicle. Your truck’s policy may help with liability while towing, but it usually does not pay to repair or replace the trailer.
Know what you are choosing
What an RV policy typically includes
Every policy is different, and the options available depend on the company and your RV. These are the coverages people most often ask us about.
Liability
Helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to other people while driving or towing your RV, up to the limits you choose.
Collision and comprehensive
Collision helps repair your RV after a crash. Comprehensive helps with things like theft, fire, hail, falling trees, and animal strikes.
Personal belongings
Helps replace things you keep in the RV, such as dishes, bedding, electronics, and camping gear, if they are stolen or damaged by a covered event.
Campsite liability
Sometimes called vacation liability. It helps if a guest is hurt at your campsite or in your parked RV and you are found responsible.
Roadside help
Options for towing, tire changes, jump starts, and lockouts. RVs are large, so towing help built for them can matter more than on a car.
Full-timer coverage
If the RV is your main home, this option works more like a homeowners policy, with broader liability and belongings coverage.
Some companies also offer options for emergency lodging after a covered breakdown far from home, or replacement coverage for newer RVs. Ask us which options are available for your RV.
Is it right for you
Who needs RV insurance
If you own a motorhome, you will need liability coverage to drive it legally, just like a car. If you own a towable camper, coverage is not always required by law, but a lender will usually require it and your own savings depend on it.
Weekend and seasonal campers
You use your RV for trips during the camping season and store it the rest of the year. Coverage can be set up around that pattern.
Full-time RVers
You live in your RV most or all of the year. You need coverage that protects the RV as your home, not just as a vehicle.
Families with a financed RV
If you have a loan on the RV, the lender will usually require collision and comprehensive coverage until it is paid off.
Retirees on long trips
You travel across multiple states for weeks or months. You want coverage that follows you and help that can reach you on the road.

Common questions
RV insurance questions
Does my auto insurance cover my travel trailer?
Your truck or SUV policy may extend some liability coverage while you are towing, but it usually does not pay to repair or replace the trailer, and it does not cover the belongings inside. A separate RV policy is the usual way to protect the trailer itself.
What is the difference between recreational and full-timer RV coverage?
Recreational coverage is built for people who use their RV for trips and live in a house the rest of the time. Full-timer coverage is for people who live in their RV as their main home, and it adds protection that is closer to a homeowners policy.
Do I need to insure my RV when it is in storage?
Many owners keep coverage in place all year because theft, fire, storms, and falling trees can happen in storage, too. Some companies let you lower certain coverages while the RV is parked. Ask us what options fit your situation.
What affects the price of RV insurance?
The type and value of the RV, how often you use it, where you store it, the drivers, their driving records, and the coverage and deductibles you choose can all affect your price.
