The basics

What classic car insurance is

Classic car insurance, also called collector car insurance, is a policy made for vehicles that are kept for enjoyment rather than everyday transportation. It is designed for cars that are well maintained, stored securely, and driven to shows, club events, and weekend drives.

The biggest difference from a regular auto policy is how the car is valued. A standard auto policy usually pays the actual cash value after a total loss, which means the car’s market value minus depreciation, or wear and tear over time. For a collectible car, that may be far less than what the car is really worth to a buyer.

Many collector policies offer agreed value coverage instead. You and the insurance company agree on the car’s value when the policy starts, and if the car is totaled in a covered loss, that agreed amount is what the policy pays, minus any deductible. Terms vary by company, so we will explain exactly how each option works.

Agreed value

You and the company set the car’s value up front, so there is less guesswork after a total loss.

Actual cash value

The company pays what the car is worth at the time of loss, after depreciation. This is common on standard auto policies.

Coverage details vary by company. These are the features collectors most often ask us about.

Agreed value coverage

Sets your car’s value in advance, which can be updated as the car’s value changes or as you restore it.

Liability

Helps pay if you injure someone or damage their property while driving your classic, just like a regular auto policy.

Physical damage

Helps repair your car after a crash, or after theft, fire, vandalism, or storm damage.

Spare parts coverage

Some policies help replace spare parts you keep for your car, such as extra wheels or trim.

Flexible use rules

Policies are built around pleasure driving, shows, and club events, with rules on how the car may be used.

Specialty roadside help

Some companies offer flatbed towing and roadside help suited to older vehicles.

Who classic car insurance is for

Collector car policies usually have eligibility rules. Common ones include having a separate everyday vehicle, keeping the classic in a locked garage or storage unit, and limiting how it is used. Each company sets its own rules.

Antique and vintage owners

Older cars and trucks that are preserved or restored and driven only occasionally.

Muscle car and hot rod owners

Performance cars and custom builds where value depends on originality or the quality of the work.

Owners of modern collectibles

Newer limited production or exotic cars kept as collectibles rather than daily drivers.

Restoration projects

Cars that are being restored. Some companies offer options while the car is under restoration.

Common questions

Classic car insurance questions

What makes a car eligible for classic car insurance?

Each company sets its own rules. Common requirements include that the car is kept for pleasure use, stored in a secure garage or unit, in good condition, and that you have another vehicle for daily driving.

What is agreed value coverage?

Agreed value means you and the insurance company agree on your car’s value when the policy begins. If the car is totaled in a covered loss, the policy pays that agreed amount, minus any deductible, according to the policy terms.

Can I drive my classic car to work?

Most collector policies do not allow regular commuting. They are built for shows, club events, and pleasure drives. If you drive the car often, a standard auto policy may be the better fit.

Do I need an appraisal?

Some companies ask for an appraisal or photos, especially for higher value cars. Receipts for restoration work can also help support the value.

Can I insure a car that is being restored?

Some companies offer coverage for cars under restoration. Tell us about the project and we will check the options available.
