The basics

What motorcycle, ATV, and golf cart insurance is

Powersports insurance is coverage for vehicles you ride for fun or short trips, such as motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and golf carts. Like auto insurance, it can pay for damage you cause to others and for damage to your own ride.

These vehicles often fall through the cracks of other policies. An auto policy normally does not cover a motorcycle. A homeowners policy may offer little or no coverage for an ATV or golf cart once it leaves your property, and it may not cover liability if someone is hurt while riding.

In Ohio and most states, a motorcycle used on public roads needs liability coverage. Off-road vehicles and golf carts have different rules depending on where you ride them, so we will help you understand what applies to you.

Street riding

Sport bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, trikes, and scooters that you ride on public roads.

Off-road and neighborhood

ATVs, UTVs and side by sides, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and golf carts used on trails, farms, or in communities.

Know what you are choosing

What a powersports policy typically includes

Options vary by company and by vehicle. These are the coverages riders ask us about most.

Liability

Helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to others while riding, up to your policy limits.

Collision

Helps repair or replace your bike, ATV, or cart after a crash.

Comprehensive

Helps with theft, fire, vandalism, storm damage, and animal strikes.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Helps if you are hurt by a driver who has little or no insurance, where the coverage applies.

Custom parts and gear

Helps replace aftermarket parts, accessories, and riding gear such as helmets and jackets, depending on the policy.

Roadside and trip help

Optional help with towing and getting home if you break down while riding.

Is it right for you

Who needs powersports insurance

If you ride on public roads, liability coverage is usually required. If you ride off road or in a golf cart community, coverage may be optional, but it can protect you from paying for an accident out of pocket.

Motorcycle riders

Commuters, weekend riders, and touring riders who want coverage for the bike and for their liability on the road.

ATV and UTV owners

Hunters, farmers, and trail riders whose machines leave the property and carry passengers.

Golf cart owners

People who drive golf carts in their neighborhood, campground, or community, where homeowners coverage may not follow.

Parents of young riders

Families whose kids ride dirt bikes or four wheelers and want liability protection in place.

How Kaufman helps

How we help you insure your ride

We are an independent agency, so we can compare powersports coverage from multiple companies instead of offering just one.

Tell us what you ride

Share the year, make, model, and value, any custom parts, who rides, and where you ride.

We compare companies

An agent reviews options from the companies we work with and explains what each one includes.

Choose your coverage

Pick limits and deductibles that fit your budget. We can also review how your ride fits with your auto and umbrella policies.

We focus on Ohio and North Carolina, and we can also help riders in most other states. Many riders store their bikes in the winter, so ask us about options for the off season.

Common questions

Motorcycle, ATV, and golf cart insurance questions

Do I need motorcycle insurance in Ohio?

Yes. Ohio requires proof of financial responsibility for motorcycles ridden on public roads, which most riders meet with a liability policy. Other states have their own rules.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my ATV or golf cart?

A homeowners policy may cover some off-road vehicles or golf carts only while they are on your property, and coverage is often limited. Once you ride off your property, you usually need a separate policy.

Can I insure an ATV or UTV that I use on my farm?

Often, yes. Tell us how you use the machine, including any farm or work use, so we can find a policy that fits.

Are custom parts and accessories covered?

Many policies include some coverage for custom parts and equipment, and you can often add more. We will review what your bike or machine has so you are not underinsured.

Can I lower my coverage in the winter?

Some companies let you reduce coverage while your bike is stored, while keeping protection against theft and fire. We can explain your options.
