Quick answer

  • Ohio’s liability minimum is 25/50/25: $25,000 for one person’s injury or death, $50,000 for two or more, and $25,000 for property damage.[1]
  • That minimum pays people you hurt or property you damage. It does not pay for your own car or your own injuries.
  • Whether it is enough depends on what you have to protect. A financed car, a house, or savings often points to higher limits and coverages beyond the minimum.
  • When you are ready, we will shop multiple carriers that fit and recommend limits we would put on our own household.

Heard “just get the minimum” and wondered if that is smart for your household? Ohio sets a legal floor for liability. It keeps you legal. It is not always the right amount of protection. Below is what 25/50/25 means, who it pays, what it leaves out, and how we help you pick limits that fit.

What Ohio requires

Ohio requires drivers to carry liability insurance at least at these limits:[1]

  • $25,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident
  • $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people in an accident
  • $25,000 for property damage in an accident

Agents often write that as 25/50/25. You may also need to show proof of insurance at a traffic stop, an accident scene, or a vehicle inspection.[1]

Who the minimum pays (and who it does not)

Liability pays for harm you cause to other people and their property, up to your limits. It does not repair your car. It does not cover your medical bills from the crash. Those needs sit on other coverages, if you buy them.

What the minimum does not cover

The state minimum is liability only. It does not include:

  • Damage to your own vehicle (comprehensive or collision)
  • Your own medical costs from an accident
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, unless you add it
  • Roadside help, rental reimbursement, or similar extras

If you finance or lease, your lender usually requires comprehensive and collision. That is separate from Ohio’s liability minimum.

When the bill is bigger than your limits

A serious injury claim or a newer vehicle you hit can cost more than $25,000 or $50,000. If your liability limits run out, you can still owe the rest. That is why people with a home, retirement savings, or a newer car often choose higher liability limits. We walk through that with you. We do not push a number for its own sake.

Loans, leases, and lender requirements

Ohio’s minimum does not satisfy a typical loan or lease. Lenders want their collateral protected, so they ask for comprehensive and collision (full coverage, in everyday talk). If you are buying or leasing, bring the lender’s requirements. We will match the policy to what the bank asks for and to what you want for yourself.

Options beyond the minimum

Beyond 25/50/25, most households look at:

  • Higher liability limits
  • Comprehensive and collision (often required with a loan)
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist coverage
  • Medical payments, roadside, and rental reimbursement when they fit

There is no single right package for every Ohio driver. Your commute, your car, your house, and who is on the policy all matter. That is the conversation we have before we quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ohio’s minimum car insurance?

Ohio requires at least $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage in an accident.[1] That is 25/50/25.

Does the Ohio state minimum cover my car?

No. The liability minimum pays for damage you cause to others. It does not pay for your own car or your own injuries.

Is the Ohio state minimum enough?

It depends on what you have to protect. The minimum keeps you legal. Higher limits can make sense if you own a home, have savings, or drive a newer car. We help you look at that and quote the carriers that fit.
