Small business insurance package

Business owners policy (BOP) insurance for small businesses

A business owners policy, or BOP, bundles the coverage many small businesses need most into one package: property protection for your building and equipment, and liability protection if someone is hurt or their property is damaged. Kaufman Insurance Group compares BOP options from multiple companies.

  • Property and general liability in one policy
  • Business income coverage often included

The basics

What a business owners policy is

A business owners policy is a package policy designed for small and mid-sized businesses. It combines commercial property coverage and general liability coverage, and it often includes business income coverage, into one policy with one premium.

Packaging these coverages can make insurance simpler to buy and manage. Instead of shopping for separate property and liability policies, you get a policy built around the common needs of businesses like yours. Many companies also let you add options that fit your industry.

Not every business qualifies for a BOP. Insurance companies usually offer them to smaller businesses with lower-risk operations, such as offices, retail stores, and many service businesses. Businesses with higher risks may need separate policies instead. We will help you figure out which fits.

Property side

Helps protect your building if you own it, plus your equipment, furniture, inventory, and supplies.

Liability side

Helps with claims that your business injured someone or damaged their property, including legal defense.

Know what you are choosing

What a BOP typically includes

Every company builds its BOP a little differently. These are the parts most policies include or offer.

Commercial property

Covers your building, if you own it, and your business personal property after covered losses such as fire, theft, and wind.

General liability

Covers claims of bodily injury, property damage, and personal and advertising injury caused by your business.

Business income

Helps replace lost income and pay ongoing expenses if a covered loss forces you to close temporarily.

Extra expense

Helps pay extra costs to keep running after a covered loss, such as renting a temporary space.

Optional add-ons

Options such as equipment breakdown, data breach, or employee dishonesty coverage, depending on the company.

What is not included

Commercial auto, workers compensation, and professional liability are separate policies.

Is it right for you

Who a business owners policy is for

A BOP is often a good fit for small businesses that have a physical location, own equipment or inventory, and deal with the public.

Retail shops

Stores with inventory, fixtures, and customers visiting every day.

Offices

Professional and administrative offices with computers, furniture, and visitors.

Service businesses

Businesses that work at customers’ homes or offices and keep equipment at a shop.

Small building owners

Owners of small commercial buildings that house their business or tenants.

Common questions

Business owners policy questions

What does a business owners policy cover?

A BOP usually combines commercial property coverage, general liability coverage, and business income coverage in one policy. Many companies offer optional add-ons.

Does a BOP include workers compensation?

No. Workers compensation is separate. In Ohio, it comes from the state, not an insurance company. If you have employees in other states, we can help with workers compensation there as it comes up.

Does a BOP cover my business vehicles?

No. Vehicles used for business need a commercial auto policy.

Can any business get a BOP?

No. Insurance companies usually offer BOPs to smaller businesses in certain industries. Higher-risk businesses may need separate property and liability policies.

Is a BOP cheaper than buying policies separately?

It can be, because the coverages are packaged together. It depends on your business and the companies available. We can compare both ways.
