For apartment owners and property managers

A renters insurance program for apartments, plus landlord coverage for owners

If your lease requires renters insurance, someone has to help residents find a policy and someone has to collect proof. Kaufman Insurance Group gives your residents a licensed agent who compares renters insurance from multiple companies, and helps you, the owner, with landlord and property coverage for the building.

  • Renters insurance quotes for residents, compared across companies
  • Your property listed as an interested party when the company allows it
  • Landlord and commercial property options for the building itself

Personal & Commercial · Quick Quotes – Good Rates · Great Companies

As an independent agency, we compare renters and landlord insurance from the companies we work with, so your customers are not limited to one company’s price or rules. Which companies can quote a customer depends on what they want to insure, where they live, and each company’s own rules.

What your customers need

What your residents and your building need

Many apartment communities require renters insurance in the lease, and the reason is simple. The owner’s building policy covers the building, not the resident’s belongings and not the resident’s personal liability. If a resident leaves a pan on the stove and causes a fire, the liability coverage on their renters policy may help pay for damage to the building and neighboring units, depending on the policy.

Most properties that require renters insurance also ask to be listed on the resident’s policy as an interested party. An interested party is not covered by the policy, but the insurance company notifies them if the policy is canceled, so your office knows when coverage lapses. Residents often do not know how to ask for this, which leaves your team chasing documents at move-in and renewal.

Owners have their own coverage to think about. A smaller rental is often insured with a landlord policy, sometimes called a dwelling fire policy, which covers the building, lost rent after a covered loss, and the owner’s liability. Larger apartment buildings usually need commercial property and liability coverage. The right choice depends on the number of units, the building, and how it is managed.

Common questions

Questions from apartment owners and property managers

Can we require residents to buy renters insurance from Kaufman?

No, and we would not want you to. Residents should be free to buy renters insurance from any agent or company. We are one easy option you can share.

What is an interested party?

An interested party is a person or company the insurance company notifies if a policy is canceled or changed. It does not give the interested party any coverage. Many leases ask residents to list the property this way.

What is the difference between an additional insured and an interested party?

An additional insured gets certain protection under the policy. An interested party only gets notice if the policy is canceled or changed. Most renters requirements ask for interested party status. Whether a renters policy can add either depends on the company.

What does renters insurance cover?

Usually the resident’s belongings, their personal liability, and extra living costs if a covered loss makes the unit unlivable. Details depend on the company and the options chosen.

Can you insure my apartment building?

Often, yes. Smaller rentals often fit a landlord policy, and larger buildings may need commercial property and liability coverage. Availability depends on the building, its location, and each company’s rules.

Will my staff need to explain insurance to customers?

No. Your team only needs to fill out the referral form or point the customer to your personal referral page. Unless someone on your staff holds an insurance license, questions about coverage, limits, and price should come to our licensed agents.
